One should know how to recognize unexpected findings in daily life, have a trained eye. Things happen when you are aware of them. It’s like recognizing a stain that triggers sense in a painting… but if you’re not painting, nothing happens.

In 1975 he moved from Mallorca to Barcelona to study at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts, which later dropped out to begin  his independent career. In 1974 he held his first solo exhibition at the Picarol Gallery in Mallorca. In the eighties he works intensely painting and drawing while travelling all over Europe and Africa. He starts exhibiting in international major galleries and  breaks onto the international scene at the Sâo Paulo Biennial in 1981 and Documenta VII in Kassel in 1982. In 2009 he represents Spain at the 53 Venice Bienale.

Based between Paris and Mallorca, since the mid-eighties his frequent trips to West Africa nourish his imagination with figures and myths. Working as the painter of the cave, he starts using clay to produce sculptures taught by African crafstmen. The observation of Nature is his major influence.

Several institutions have devoted large exhibitions to his work, such as the CAPC in Bordeaux, IVAM in Valencia, Jeu de Paume, Centre Pompidou, Musée des Arts Décoratifs and Museé du Louvre in Paris, Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome, Museu d’Art Contemporani in Barcelona, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and Musee Picasso Paris.
